The Habitats directive and the Natura 2000 network The Directive 92/43, known as the habitats directive (and its extension by the Directive 97/62/CE) establishes the basis for the conservation of those species and habitats that this Directive considers interesting from a conservation point of view. Protection is achieved mainly through two initiatives: 1) the inclusion of target species in every countrys protected species catalogue and 2) the designation of areas which harbour a significant share of the species and habitats listed in the directive. These areas are termed LIC and its designation corresponds to the incumbent administration of the respective member countries. Once duly approved by the Comission, the whole set of SCIs in the different EC countries will make up the natura 2000 network. As to what regards Spain, LIC designation is incumbent upon each autonomous administration, which is responsible for the elaboration and submission of the proposals to the central administration which will finally pass them on to the European Comission. The Generalitat Valenciana, through a government agreement reached in July 10th 2001, designated its set of SCIs. Altogether they account for 26% of the surface of the valencian territory and include over 60.000 hectares of maritime surface.
The project: Conservation of priority habitats in the Valencian Community According to the Directive 92/43/CE, appointed SCIs cater for the conservation needs of the species and habitats designated as relevant for conservation. Thus, within SCIs it is appropiate to implement not only passive conservation measures but also active measures, that is, management actions whose objective is to conserve and improve habitats and species which are interesting from a conservationist perspective. This was the basic idea that prompted the Conservation and Management of Biodiversity Departmentto designa project whose objective was to plan and implement conservation actions for priority habitats and species in a total of 38 SCIs.This project was presented to the European Commission which approved its funding through its financial instrument LIFE-Nature.
The habitats concerned in this project The projects objective is to restore those habitats whose conservation is considered priority in the Directive 92/43/CE through the restoration of the most relevant plant communities. See below for a list of the habitats in which actions are planned:
